The Government of Japan granted funding support to World Health Organization (WHO) Mongolia to support the country to strengthen capacity of local health systems for outbreak response.
Dr Socorro Escalante, WHO Representative to Mongolia, paid a courtesy visit today to His Excellency Mr Igawahara Masaru, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia, to express sincere appreciation for the Government of Japan’s generous support to the work of WHO in Mongolia.
During the meeting, Dr Escalante conveyed WHO’s sincere appreciation for Japan’s support to the project “Strengthening Mongolia’s Outbreak Response at the Frontlines through Collaboration with Japan”. She emphasized that this contribution is key to further strengthening Mongolia’s health system capacities, particularly at the subnational level, while also reinforcing the longstanding collaboration between Mongolia and Japan in advancing health security and preparedness.
The Government of Japan has granted US$ 400 000 under the Japan Supplementary Budget. This represents Japan’s continued support and strong collaboration with WHO to advance health for all in countries.

The project will support Mongolia in strengthening its capacity to detect, prevent and respond to infectious disease outbreaks, particularly at the provincial and subnational levels. Key interventions include enhancing disease surveillance and early warning systems, strengthening infection prevention and control in health facilities and schools, building the capacity of frontline health workers, and improving clinical management of severe cases – especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
“Japan’s support comes at a critical moment and will help ensure that health workers across Mongolia are better equipped to respond rapidly and effectively to outbreaks,” said Dr Escalante. “We deeply appreciate the Government of Japan’s continued leadership and commitment to strengthening health security and protecting vulnerable populations. WHO Mongolia is honored to partner with the Government of Japan to protect the health of the population in Mongolia."
The initiative will also foster technical collaboration with the Japan Institute of Health Security (JIHS), bringing valuable expertise in outbreak response, epidemiology and public health preparedness. This collaboration further strengthens the longstanding partnership between Mongolia and Japan and contributes to long-term national and regional health security.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Government of Japan and WHO to support Mongolia in building resilient health systems and safeguarding the health and well-being of its population.
